Quilting to me:

"In this crazy fast and furious world we live in I believe it is our responsibility to take time for ourselves, even if it is once a week or month. Doing what you love is one way slow the craziness down. I like to think I'm doing what I love."

Underground Railroad Block 8

Underground Railroad Block 8

Log Cabin

The Log Cabin block is the fifth quilt in the secret code.  The block may have indicated there was a specific log cabin in Cleveland that was a safe house.

It also may have directed runaways to blued a log cabin to weather out winter and establish permanent residency in a "free" area.

The usual center color of the block was red, representing the hearth or fire of the cabin, also using a black centering the quilt, hanging in front of a house indicated it was a "safe" house.

A yellow center indicated a light or beacon in the wilderness.

This is the picture from the book.

This is my block.

You will need:  center block color
                      8 darks
                      8 lights
( I used 4 darks and 4 lights as shown above, and used the same print for two rows in the block.  As you will see in my block. )

Cutting:

2 1/2" square for the center square.

1 3/4" strip of 6 darks and 6 lights.
( I don't cut the exact length I need, I like it alittle longer. I like to trim them as I sew the strips to the block. This gives me a little room for error. )

2" strips for the four outer strips. 2 darks and 2 lights.

Lay out your strips so you will know the order you want to sew them.

Starting with the center, sew a light to one side of the center, then continue around the square with the next 3 strips.

Press seams away from center.

Now sew your next starting with the next light going around doing light, dark and then the last dark.

Now for your next row around.  Repeat as before.

Now the next row around is the last row so you will be using the 2" strips for the next four strips.

This is your block.  Square up your block to 12 1/2".

Thought I would give you a look at my 8 blocks.  I'm really loving doing this quilt and the block we are doing.  If you want you can add a picture of your blocks or a block to the comments on my blog.

Till next month, have fun with your block.
Carol
